Renovations at the Africa House at University of Massachusetts Amherst focused on critical accessibility and life safety upgrades within the occupied campus building. Completed in 2010, the project included the installation of a new elevator and handicap-accessible ramp, providing long-overdue ADA accessibility improvements to the multi-story facility. The work also included the installation of a new fire protection sprinkler system and upgraded fire alarm system to bring the building into compliance with current safety codes and improve overall occupant safety.
The project was carefully phased and coordinated to minimize disruption to ongoing campus activities and building occupants throughout construction. As part of the university’s broader reinvestment initiative for the historic New Africa House, the renovations modernized essential building systems while preserving the facility’s role as an important cultural and academic center on campus.
