Opened for the 2015–2016 school year, Auburn Middle School is a 100,000 SF MSBA-funded facility serving approximately 560 students in grades 6–8. Delivered through the Massachusetts School Building Authority program, the project replaced the district’s original 1959-era middle school with a modern, high-performance learning environment.
Designed to support a team-based educational model, the school features flexible instructional spaces and state-of-the-art science labs equipped with short-throw projection technology and mobile devices to enhance collaboration and hands-on learning. Shared spaces such as the media center and open commons areas support adaptable teaching and student interaction throughout the building.
The facility includes a central cafetorium, a gymnasium with spectator seating, and a welcoming entry lobby highlighted by a skylight system that brings natural light into the main circulation space. Outdoor learning is supported through a dedicated courtyard classroom area, along with a synthetic turf field designed for multi-purpose use.
Sustainability was a key focus of the MSBA-supported design, incorporating MA-CHPS principles, geothermal wells, photovoltaic solar panels, solar-controlled shading, and triple-insulated glazing to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Completed in approximately 14 months, the project delivered a durable, efficient, and future-ready middle school for the Auburn community.
