The MassMutual Center is the pride of downtown Springfield. But despite its storied place in the city’s skyline, the renovation and expansion presented many constraints. Extensive demolition and all renovations had to take place while the building was occupied. Construction was also extremely challenging due to site constraints; the structure occupies an entire city block, leaving no room for the staging of materials or manpower.
The final project included the renovation of the existing civic center, as well as the construction of a new convention center. It opened in September 2005.
