The UMass Amherst Recreation Center is a 120,000-square-foot, three-level facility located along Commonwealth Avenue that brings together fitness, wellness, and student life in one central hub. Designed by Sasaki, the building features a prominent public concourse that connects directly to a landscaped quadrangle and serves as both a circulation route and a social gathering space with seating, a café area, and informal event space at the main stair.
Inside, the facility includes expansive weight and fitness areas spread across two levels, a three-court gymnasium, elevated indoor jogging track, wellness center, and three multi-purpose rooms used for classes and club activities. It also houses locker rooms, administrative offices for intramural sports, and student club programming space, supporting more than 2,500 daily users.
The building’s design emphasizes natural light and transparency, with brick, glass, and aluminum shading devices that connect it visually to the broader UMass campus while improving energy performance. Integrated building systems—including automated lighting, HVAC controls, and occupancy sensors—support efficiency and reduce energy use, while features like hydration stations, cardio theater equipment, and digital displays enhance the student experience.
