Springfield Prep Charter School involved the transformation of an existing commercial office building into a modern K–8 educational facility, creating a permanent campus for approximately 500 students in Springfield, Massachusetts. This charter school construction project included the renovation of approximately 39,000 SF of interior space and the construction of a new 6,700 SF pre-engineered gymnasium addition on a 4.26-acre site.
As an adaptive reuse school renovation, the existing building was fully reconfigured to support a contemporary learning environment. The project introduced new classrooms, breakout and small-group learning spaces, administrative offices, a cafeteria, and additional program areas designed to support day-to-day school operations. The layout aligns with Springfield Prep’s co-teaching model, allowing for both collaborative instruction and individualized learning.
The new gymnasium addition functions as a flexible, multi-purpose space for athletics, assemblies, and school-wide events, serving as a central gathering area for the campus.
Site improvements included updates to parking, pedestrian circulation, and landscaped areas, along with the addition of outdoor play and activity spaces. The redefined main entrance creates a clear and welcoming point of access for students, staff, and visitors.
Delivered within the constraints typical of charter school development, this K–8 school construction project required careful coordination, cost management, and schedule control to meet a fixed opening timeline. The result is a thoughtfully adapted facility that supports student learning while providing a long-term home for the Springfield Prep community.
