Walpole Middle School

Opened to students in Fall 2024, the new Walpole Middle School is a 162,000 SF facility serving approximately 1,000 students in grades 6–8. The project consolidated Bird and Johnson Middle Schools into a single, modern campus designed to support collaboration, flexibility, and long-term growth.

Built on the site of the fully occupied Bird Middle School, the project required careful phasing and coordination to maintain daily school operations throughout construction. Designed to serve as a cornerstone for the community, the school reflects the Town of Walpole’s commitment to an innovative, inclusive, and future-ready learning environment. The building is organized around flexible learning neighborhoods with adaptable classrooms, breakout spaces, and integrated technology to support both independent and group instruction. Natural light, durable materials, and clear wayfinding contribute to a welcoming and secure environment for students and staff.

The new facility is also designed as a community asset, with shared spaces such as the auditorium, gymnasium, and athletic fields supporting broader town use. The project is a high-performance, net-zero-ready building and achieved LEED Gold certification, incorporating all-electric systems, energy-efficient design strategies, and sustainable site features that reduce environmental impact and support long-term operational efficiency.
