South High Community School

Worcester, Massachusetts

This $210 million, 360,000 SF building replaced the old South High originally built in the late ‘70s. This new high school provides a modern, state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment including vocational programs in Diesel Technology and Culinary Arts which will prepare students for entry level jobs upon graduation. Despite challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, the Fontaine/W.T. Rich JV delivered the project on-time and millions of dollars under budget.

This large-scale and highly complex project was successfully completed on the grounds of the fully-occupied high school as well as sharing the site with an existing and also fully-occupied middle school. Fontaine leveraged the use of technology to address the phasing and logistical challenges of the project. The use of BIM and virtual reality 3D models helped focus on the site conditions, safety measures and phasing efforts throughout the project.
