White Street Fire Station

The White Street Fire Station is a 16,200-square-foot, three-story facility designed to serve as a modern fire response hub for the City of Springfield. Built on a tight, triangular site at White and Vermont Streets, the station includes three apparatus bays on the ground level, with a second-floor conference and training room and administrative offices on the third floor. The living quarters are located above the apparatus bays to improve site efficiency and accommodate on-site personnel parking.

Designed by Dore + Whittier, the station responds to its dense Victorian-era neighborhood with a form that blends into the surrounding context, including long, sloping rooflines that reflect nearby residential architecture. The project was developed with a focus on long-term durability, targeting a 50-year building life while minimizing construction impact on the surrounding community.

Sustainability was a central focus of the design, resulting in Springfield’s first LEED-certified building and the first LEED Gold fire station in New England. The facility was designed to maximize energy efficiency, reduce water usage, and minimize environmental impact while supporting modern firefighting operations.

The project has also received industry recognition, including the 2012 FIERO Honor (Gold) Award and the 2011 Fire Chief Station Style Bronze Award for Career Stations, highlighting its success in combining operational performance, sustainability, and contextual design within a constrained urban site.
