Fontaine Bros., Inc. completed a $14.4 million renovation and addition to Berkshire Hall, a historic academic building at Berkshire School, transforming it into a modern, centralized hub for teaching, administration, and student life. The project included approximately 32,000 square feet of renovation and a 6,000-square-foot addition, carefully integrated into the existing structure to preserve the building’s character while improving performance and functionality.
Originally constructed in the early 20th century, Berkshire Hall was reimagined to meet the demands of a contemporary independent school campus. The project introduced new classrooms, administrative offices, student commons, and collaborative learning environments, along with a two-story central atrium that brings natural light into the core of the building. Significant upgrades were made to building systems, accessibility, and circulation, creating a more connected and efficient layout for students and faculty.
Working closely with the owner and design team throughout preconstruction and construction, Fontaine focused on constructability, coordination, and long-term value. Careful phasing and planning allowed the project to be completed within an active campus environment while maintaining daily school operations.
The result is a revitalized academic facility that supports 21st century learning while respecting the history and identity of the Berkshire School campus.
