East Longmeadow residents approved funding for a new high school and natatorium, moving forward with a long-anticipated replacement project through the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) program. Fontaine is proud to serve as Construction Manager at Risk for this transformative community investment.
The new 191,796-square-foot East Longmeadow High School will be constructed directly behind the existing building, allowing students to remain in place throughout construction. Once complete, the existing school will be replaced with a modern campus designed to better serve current and future educational needs, along with upgraded athletic fields and improved site circulation.
Shaped through extensive community engagement, the design reflects a shared vision for a welcoming, student-centered learning environment built around Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. The school is organized to support collaboration and flexibility, featuring a secure central lobby, district offices, administrative spaces, a new auditorium, and a gymnasium at the heart of the building.
A central media center connects academic wings organized into smaller learning communities, supporting both independent and collaborative learning. The cafeteria and commons open to an outdoor terrace with views of nearby natural areas, strengthening the connection between learning spaces and the surrounding environment.
The project also includes a community-access natatorium that supports both academic programs and competitive swimming in East Longmeadow. Site improvements will enhance traffic flow, parking, and recreation, including updated athletic fields, basketball courts, concessions, a press box, and new tennis and pickleball courts.
Sustainability is a core focus of the project, featuring an all-electric building design supported by a 450kW rooftop solar array, EV charging stations, and natural stormwater management systems.
Fontaine is honored to partner with Skanska and the design team of Jones Whitsett Architects and SMMA to deliver a modern, high-performance learning environment scheduled to open in September 2026.
