The
Brick, Deerfield Academy's dining hall, was a transformative
renovation and expansion that reimagined one of the school's most iconic campus
buildings while preserving its historic character. Fontaine expanded and
modernized the Academy's original 1948 dining hall, creating approximately
12,000 square feet of dining space capable of seating the
school's enrollment of 650 students for family-style meals, a cornerstone
of the Academy's educational experience.
The
project included a complete renovation of the commercial kitchen and servery,
improved circulation and food service operations, and thoughtfully integrated
modern building systems while maintaining the architectural character and
grandeur of the original structure. Constructed on an active independent school
campus, the project required extensive phasing and coordination. The completed
facility now serves as the heart of campus life, providing a modern, efficient,
and welcoming gathering space that supports community, wellness, and the
traditions that define Deerfield Academy.
To ensure dining
operations remained uninterrupted throughout construction, Fontaine also
delivered a 37,750-square-foot temporary dining facility. The temporary complex
featured a fully operational commercial kitchen, a large dining and gathering
space, and supporting restroom facilities, providing students and
employees with a seamless dining experience while work on The Brick
progressed. Fontaine worked closely with Deerfield’s project team
throughout the design and installation process to ensure the temporary facility
met the Academy's operational needs and maintained the high level of
service expected on campus.
